The Maverick Canadian Serving Up Surprises on the Court

Fresh off a spirited run at the US Open warm-up events, Shapovalov arrived in London earlier this week for a training stint, sparking whispers about his future plans and whether a deeper Wimbledon campaign might finally be on the cards next season.

Poundland Saved from Administration as Court Approves Rescue Plan

At Tuesday’s hearing, lawyers representing Poundland told the court that the business was facing “acute liquidity pressure” and required urgent restructuring to remain solvent. The judge, acknowledging the seriousness of the situation, sanctioned the plan, which will allow the company to reduce debts, renegotiate leases, and secure fresh financing.

Downing Street Accuses Russia of ‘Disrespect’ Towards Ukraine Peace Efforts

Sir Keir Starmer’s official spokesman said on Monday that while Britain remained committed to supporting diplomatic avenues, Moscow had shown little genuine willingness to engage constructively. “The Russian side continues to set conditions that cannot be taken seriously,” the spokesman said. “By doing so, they are not only prolonging the conflict but disrespecting the very idea of peace.”

Business & MarketsPhilanthropist Survives Suicide Attempt in U.S. Home

Durham, North Carolina — Billionaire and philanthropist Courtney Jordan is recovering in a North Carolina hospital after surviving a suspected suicide attempt at his American residence late Saturday evening, according to U.S. authorities.

The 37-year-old financier, who divides his time between London and the United States, was found unconscious at his Durham, North Carolina estate by a personal assistant. Emergency services were called to the scene just before midnight. Mr Jordan was initially transported to Duke University Hospital, but due to the complexity of his condition, he was later transferred to UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill.

His condition is now listed as stable, and doctors expect him to recover physically in the coming days.

Internationally Renowned, Personally Struggling

Mr Jordan is best known in Britain for his extensive philanthropic work, particularly through the Jordan Initiative, which has funded education reform, youth mental health services, and medical research across the UK and Europe. He has donated more than £600 million in the last decade, earning him accolades from both Parliament and the Royal Family.

He has also become a significant player in transatlantic investment, particularly in ethical technology ventures and renewable energy. Yet despite his public success, those close to him have described a man burdened by intense private pressure.

A longtime associate told The London Examiner:

“Courtney has always carried the weight of his work—and the expectations that come with it—with extraordinary grace. But even he isn’t immune to the emotional toll that comes with this level of responsibility.”

American Authorities: No Foul Play Suspected

Durham Police have confirmed they responded to a medical emergency at Mr Jordan’s residence shortly before midnight on Saturday. While the full details of the incident have not been released, sources close to the matter suggest the event involved an overdose of prescription medication.

Investigators have stated that no criminal activity or foul play is suspected, and a police spokesperson described it as “a mental health crisis requiring immediate medical intervention.”

Mental Health at the Top

Mr Jordan’s situation has reignited conversation around the psychological cost of power, wealth, and public expectation. Experts point out that even those perceived to be among the most successful are often at heightened risk due to the isolating pressures of leadership and visibility.

In a 2023 speech at Cambridge, Mr Jordan addressed the issue directly:

“Too many assume success is immunity. It isn’t. If anything, it amplifies the silence.”
